What Is a Himalayan Salt Lamp? A Beginner's Guide

24 May 2026

A Himalayan salt lamp is the pink block glowing on half the bedside tables in the country, giving off that warm amber light. If you've wondered what it actually is, how it works, and whether the health claims stack up, here's a straight answer plus the practical bits: choosing one, and keeping it happy.

What is a Himalayan salt lamp?

It's a lamp carved from a solid lump of natural Himalayan rock salt, hollowed out to take a small bulb. Switch it on and the crystal lights from the inside, giving a soft amber glow. The pink and orange tones come from trace minerals in the rock, mainly iron. Each one is carved by hand, so no two match in shape or colour, and most of the pieces in our natural salt lamp collection keep that rough, one-off character.

At heart it's a decorative light. A salt crystal on a wooden or metal base, a bulb inside doing two jobs: the glow, and a little warmth. That warmth matters more than it sounds, because it explains the one quirk every owner runs into. Sweating.

Why salt lamps “sweat”

Salt pulls moisture straight out of the air, which is why a cool lamp in a damp room ends up with a film of dampness on the surface or base, sometimes actual droplets. It looks alarming the first time. It's completely normal, just the salt doing what salt does.

Leaving it on for a good part of the day fixes most of it, because the bulb's gentle heat evaporates the moisture and keeps the surface dry. Stand it on a coaster, cork mat or wooden board and your furniture stays dry underneath.

Do salt lamps purify the air?

This is the big one, and the claim to be honest about. There's no credible evidence that a Himalayan salt lamp purifies indoor air or clears allergens in any way that matters. The theory leans on negative ions, but a warmed block of salt doesn't produce them at levels that would affect air quality, and the bulb is nowhere near powerful enough to change that. If clean air is the goal, reach for a proven tool. Buy the lamp for the glow.

We get asked about air-cleaning constantly, and our fuller look at whether salt lamps really purify the air walks through the actual testing if you want the detail.

The genuine benefit: warm, calming light

Where a salt lamp earns its place is atmosphere. The amber light is easy on the eyes and pleasant in the evening, when harsh blue-white bulbs feel stark. As a low night light or a soft glow for winding down, it makes a room feel calmer. That comes from the colour and softness of the light rather than anything magic in the salt, but it's a real reason to own one.

Types and sizes

A few common styles, worth knowing before you buy:

  • Natural (rough) lamps. The classic look, uneven and hand-carved.
  • Crafted shapes. Salt cut into balls, pyramids and other smooth forms for a tidier, modern feel. Our crafted salt lamp range covers those.
  • Most lamps run pink or amber, though grey salt gives a cooler tone.

On size, a smaller 3 to 5 kg lamp suits a bedside table or a room of roughly 10 square metres, while larger pieces make more of a statement in bigger spaces. It's about the look and how much glow you want, not any functional claim. For the wider picture on styles and placement, our complete guide to salt lamps pulls it all together.

Choosing the right bulb

Most salt lamps take a small incandescent bulb, usually 15 to 25 watts, which gives both the warm light and the gentle heat that keeps the salt dry. Larger lamps sit at the top of that range. Low-heat LED bulbs light the salt but barely warm it, so the lamp sweats more readily in a humid room. One thing that catches people out the first time: the fitting. Most of ours take a small E14 screw bulb, but some lamps use a bayonet cap instead, and a screw bulb won't go into a bayonet holder. Check which yours takes before you buy a spare, and always use the wattage the maker specifies.

Care and placement

Low-maintenance, but a few habits keep it in good shape:

  • Keep it on for a good part of the day to head off sweating.
  • Stand it on a coaster or mat so moisture doesn't reach the surface below.
  • Avoid damp, high-humidity rooms like bathrooms.
  • Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the colour over time.
  • Dust builds up? Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it.
  • Buy from a reputable retailer so the wiring and fittings meet UK safety standards.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Himalayan salt lamp made from?

Solid natural rock salt, hollowed out for a bulb and set on a wooden or metal base. The pink and amber come from trace minerals in the salt.

Do Himalayan salt lamps purify the air?

No. No credible evidence backs the air-cleaning or negative-ion claims. The glow is the real benefit. For cleaner air, use a HEPA purifier and open a window.

Why is my salt lamp wet or leaking?

Damp room, thirsty salt. Keep it switched on to warm and dry the surface, and put a coaster or mat underneath.

Are salt lamps safe to leave on?

Yes, from a reputable retailer with UK-standard wiring and the right bulb. Leaving it on also keeps the salt dry.

Where to go next

A Himalayan salt lamp is a lovely, natural way to add warm light to a room, as long as you buy it for the glow and not a health claim. Some of the character is down to how it's made, and our walk-through of how salt lamps are handcrafted from mine to home shows why each one comes out different.
